Roses Round Up! February 2024

Updated: Mar 13

Roses vs. Whitley Bay Beacons - 3/2/24

The Roses travelled up to Whitley Bay on 3rd February to take on the Beacons in their first meeting of this season. CJ Harrison (Roses’ Captain) opened the scoring 1:48m into the first frame. Iona Harrison (Whitley - no relation to CJ) responded quickly for the Beacons to tie it up at 1-1, 13 seconds later. Halfway through the first period, Claire Wilson made it 2-1 for the Beacons, followed by Georgia Wilkinson who made it 3-1 for the hosts, a little over seven minutes later with a short-handed goal.  Emma Allender drew one back for the Roses 2 minutes later to make the score 3-2.

Great back and forth action kicked off the second period and it wasn’t until the Roses faced a succession of penalties called against them that the Beacons capitalised on one of the powerplays to double up their lead making it 4-2 to end the second period.

The third period saw the bad streak of penalties called against Roses continue and the Beacons took a 5-2 lead a mere 30 seconds into the period. Being three goals behind fired the Roses up and they stepped up the intensity. With eight minutes to go in the game, the Beacons started their own streak of penalties starting with a double minor called. Roses only needed a minute to make it 5-3 as Jess Holgate set up Harrison for her second goal of the game.  With Roses on the powerplay, they were able to draw another penalty to give them a two-man advantage which saw Holgate setting up Harrison once again to add a 4th goal to make it 5-4.  Fifteen seconds after adding their 4th goal, and with the continued offensive pressure, they drew another powerplay and only needed 15 seconds on the powerplay to tie up the game with a beautiful passing sequence between Holgate and Sarah Rowlands (A) to see Harrison notch her fourth goal of the game. The game finished with a 5-5 draw.

Making their debut for the Roses were Kirsty Hodgins and Jess Holgate.

Roses’ Scoring Line:

  • CJ Harrison - 4G

  • Jess Holgate - 3A

  • Emma Allender - 1G

  • Sarah Rowlands - 1A

  • Taylor Simmonds - 1A

  • Kirsty Hodgins - 1A

Roses vs. Caledonia Steel Queens – 25/2/24

The second game in February saw the Roses Scotland-bound on the 25th to face Caledonia Steel Queens. With a long journey and a 7:30pm start on a Sunday evening, the Roses had to field some unfamiliar line combinations. Anticipation for this game was high and Roses put forth a very decent effort against a full bench for the Edinburgh team but couldn’t find the back of the net. First period score was 5-0; end of the second was 8-0, and the final score was 10-0 to Caledonia. Player of the game for Roses went to defender, Kim Sharples.

Roses look forward to hosting the Steel Queens on the 6th of April with face-off at 7:30pm. Right after that game, with a face-off at 9.30pm, the Roses Development side will be facing the Steel Queens’ development side, Queen Bees, in a friendly. Spectators will be most welcome so why not come down to watch the double header! Entry is free and donations will be gladly accepted to continue supporting the club.

Do you like hockey? Enjoy watching hockey games?  Ever want to be part of the Game Day Crew?  What is Game Day Crew, you ask?  It’s volunteers who come down and help with one of the gameday duties required by England Ice Hockey and the Women’s National Ice Hockey League. We require the following to help with each home game:

  • two goal judges

  • an electronic scoreboard/timekeeper

  • a paper scoresheet keeper

Maybe you are a budding broadcaster/commentator and would like to live broadcast the Roses games (all equipment provided)?  Or you'd like to run the music to get the crowd going? Or open the penalty box doors?

All training will be provided for the tasks, and shadowing of the task may also be possible.  We are looking for the last three home games of the season, and for the 24-25 season, which typically has 6-8 home games from end of September until May. If you are interested in volunteering (we provide tea, coffee, and snacks!), please email leedsrosesihc@gmail.com.
